Stan State Women’s Cross Country Ready to Contend for NCAA Division II National Championship

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State's seventh-ranked women's cross country team will be contending for the 2022 NCAA Division II National Women's Cross Country Championship this Friday, December 2.  The nationals will take place in University Center, Wash., at Chambers Creek Regional Park with the 6K race scheduled to begin at 11:15am. 

RECAP OF THE REGIONALS:  The Warriors captured the 2022 NCAA Division II Women's Cross Country West Regional Title on November 19 at Amend Park in Billings, Mont., with 91 points.  Stan State had fourth of the top 25 finishers paced by Kaela Dishion's fifth place time of 21:13.8 followed by Najwa Chouati in tenth place with a time of 21:32.4.  Rounding out the top five for the Warriors were Yahaira Zuniga (18th, 21:43) and Haleigh Humble (52nd, 22:21.9).  Also running for Stan State at regionals were Bela Moreno (86th, 23:02.5) and Katarina Borchin (129th, 24:02). 

RECAP OF THE CCAA'S: Stan State captured its second consecutive conference title in Carmel, Calif., on November 5.  The Warriors had 39 points compared to Chico State's 52 points.  Kaela Dishion won the 6K race for the second year in a row with a course record time of 20:54.4.  She was named the CCAA Runner of the Year for the second consecutive year.  Also earning All-CCAA honors by placing in the top 15 were Najwa Chouati (third), Kayden Lagen (seventh) and Yahaira Zuniga (ninth).  Chouati was named the CCAA Newcomer of the Year.  For the second year in a row, Darren Holman was named the CCAA Coach of the Year. 

SEVENTH IN THE NATION:  Heading into this Friday's National Championship, the Warriors are ranked seventh in the nation.  Stan State has ranked in the top 15 in the nation for eight straight weeks including twice being as high as seventh. 

POST-SEASON HONORS: The Warriors have earned several post-season honors this season.  Head coach Darren Holman was named the USTFCCCA/NCAA Division II West Region Coach of the Year as announced last week.  Four Stan State harriers earned All-West Region honors by placing in the top 25 at regionals in Kaela Dishion (fifth, 21:13.8) Najwa Chouati (sixth, 21:23.7), Kayden Legan (tenth, 21:32.4) and Yahaira Zuniga (eighteenth, 21:43). 

ALL-CCAA:   Three Stan State harriers earned All-CCAA honors by finishing in the top ten at the CCAA Championships on November 5 in Carmel.  Kaela Dishion captured her second CCAA title by running a course record time of 20:54.1 in the 6K race.  She was named the CCAA Runner of the Year.  Najwa Chouati finished in third with a time of 21:20.9 and was the CCAA Newcomer of the Year.  Kayden Legan finished in seventh (21:53.36) and Yahaira Zuniga was ninth (22:03). Coach Darren Holman was named the CCAA Coach of the Year for the second year in a row. 

CCAA RUNNERS OF THE WEEK: Kaela Dishion was named the CCAA Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week three times this season (Aug. 29-Sept. 4), (Sept. 19-25) and (Oct. 10-16).  Dishion also was named the USTFCCCA National Runner of the Week for the week of Aug. 29-Sept. 4.

LAST YEAR'S NATIONALS:  Stan State finished in 12th place last year in Florida at the nationals. Kaela Dishion paced the Warriors with her 48th place time of 21:35.4.  This was the highest team finish for the Warriors since 2012 when Stan State finished in 20th place. 

ALL-AMERICAN:  To earn All-American honors, a Warrior runner needs to place in the top forty at the Nationals on Friday.
